Numbing Cream for Vaccinations

Using Numbing Creams for Vaccinations and Other Injections

There are many reasons why people may feel anxious or concerned about vaccinations, such as a fear of needles, anxiety about a treatment, or worry about potential side effects. One common concern, however, is the pain associated with the injection. This discomfort can lead to unnecessary stress, especially for young children* or those with a fear of needles. Fortunately, solutions like Numit numbing cream can help alleviate this pain and associated worry. Before we look at the solutions, let’s first understand why this fear is so prevalent1.

Understanding the Fear of Vaccinations and Needles

Vaccinations and other injection treatments can help to protect individuals and the wider community from infectious diseases, as well as for treating chronic conditions. However, despite their importance, the fear of injections and needle pain can cause significant anxiety for many adults and children*. Vaccines, along with other medications, are often administered via injections, which can be delivered to different parts of the body, including:

  • Into the muscle in the upper arm or thigh (intramuscular injections), as with vaccines

  • Into a vein (intravenous injections), such as for blood sampling or IV catheter insertion

  • Under the skin (subcutaneous injections)

The fear and pain associated with receiving injections can be a barrier for many people, particularly young children*. Fortunately, there are solutions available to help reduce these concerns and ease the experience for those who experience anxiety around needles.

How to Alleviate Needle Pain?

Needle-related anxiety is a common experience for many people, but there are ways to manage both the pain and anxiety during procedures like vaccinations.

Start by talking openly with your doctor or nurse about your concerns. By discussing your fears, your healthcare provider can take extra care and precautions to make the experience more comfortable.

You can also explore solutions like topical numbing creams, in advance, which can help reduce pain at the injection site. For example, applying Numit numbing cream to the area where the vaccination or injection procedure will be performed can help ease discomfort.

Reducing Vaccine Discomfort with Numit Numbing Cream

Numit is a specialised topical anaesthetic cream designed to reduce discomfort during procedures. It can be used by both adults and children* for various needle-based treatments, such as vaccinations, blood tests, and intravenous catheter insertions. The cream is also effective for superficial cosmetic procedures including laser hair removal and laser tattoo removal. Numit can improve your comfort and stress by making procedures less painful. Its user-friendly application and numbing action makes it a great option for managing pain for a variety of procedures.

How does Numit Numbing Cream Work?

Numit is a combination numbing cream that contains two active ingredients (local anaesthetics); lidocaine 2.5%w/w and prilocaine 2.5%w/w2

These ingredients are known to be able to dull pain sensations in the skin by disrupting the generation of pain signals that are sent by the nerves in the skin to the brain3

Both of these ingredients can make a powerful combination to work together to interrupt pain signals, essentially telling your nerves to take a break.

Numit can form a reservoir of the active ingredients in the skin during application, and these ingredients can continue to be released from this reservoir and numb the area even after the cream is removed3. This is particularly useful when it comes to getting your skin ready for piercings, vaccinations and other injection treatments.

How to Use Numit Numbing Cream in 3 Easy Steps

Numit can be applied in three steps ‘COAT, COVER and CLEAN’ before any vaccination or other injection treatment to help minimise the pain sensation (Always read the label and follow the directions for use.)4:

1. COAT

Apply a thick layer of Numit cream to clean, intact skin at least 1 hour prior to treatment. Refer to the product information leaflet for the appropriate dosage.

2. COVER

Use an occlusive dressing (one that is air-tight and clear) to cover the area. Leave this dressing on for the recommended time according to the product information leaflet.

3. CLEAN

Remove the dressing immediately before the procedure and wipe off the cream. The procedure technician can help to clean the area.
